The
Story
In a little over five years, a family of high-tech design engineers has successfully introduced a series of revolutionary fishing reels.
In 1997, Accurate Fishing Products introduced its first, revolutionary, dual-drag system fishing reels. Now a little over 9 years later, Accurate has expanded its high-tech reel series to include seven blue-water models and eight light-tackle models, all of which have been readily accepted by serious saltwater sport fishermen.
As one example of Accurate's fishing tackle industry impact, one reel model -- the Accurate Boss B2-870 proved such a hot seller this spring, during its debut at the largest consumer fishing tackle show in the country, that anglers stood four-deep across the exhibit counter as 250 of these reels sold-out in less than four hours after the show's opening!
Why a Twin Drag?
Before introduction of our patent-pending TwinDrag system, traditional fishing reel design applied drag to only one side of the reel spool. Try to stop your car while braking only the wheels on one side. Besides veering you into a skid, a one-sided system would produce an imbalance on moving parts, creating erratic pressure, and prematurely wear out brake materials. The dynamics are no different in single-drag reels. Imagine the increased efficiency of equal pressure applied to both sides of the spool: the bearings, spool shaft, etc., receive a more balanced load, creating stronger, smoother drags, with increased heat dissipation. TwinDrag design also requires less pressure to be applied to each side of the spool, allowing precise drag settings with little drag fluctuation.
Our Platinum TwinDrag reels are also designed with a preset lever (the Boss ATDs have a preset knob) which allows for a precise setting of the drag range. Used in conjunction with the preset lever is a handy, graduated, alphabetical "letter" scale which takes the guesswork out of setting the drag by serving as a definitive, visual reference guide during drag adjustment.
Our ATD reels offer excellent, unhindered freespooling in every drag-setting range from less than 1-pound to total lock-down (more than 70 pounds of drag pressure). They're always ready to fish, right out of the box, with no additional "tuning" or "blueprinting" necessary.
Materials Matter
Materials play a major role in TwinDrag reel design. We carefully consider how all materials relate to each other, especially after introduction into a saltwater environment. You won't find die-cast parts anywhere on our reels. We produce our ATD reels from solid-bar, aluminum stock, using 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum for all major components such as sideplates, frame, spool, handle and base clamp.
To make our drag-friction washers, we've selected titanium, because it is also very light, super strong and does not shed any part of itself onto the drag washer material.
At-sea performance shows that our drag washers last incredibly long. Our first production, demo reels had rugged use for over 40 months and we haven't needed to change a single drag washer during that time! And these are reels seeing duty aboard multi-day, big-game fishing trips in Mexican waters, where the reels have caught literally thousands of game fish, including giant yellowfin tuna weighing up to more than 300 pounds. These reels have also been "overboard" and retrieved many times -- after huge tuna being battled stand-up style made it necessary for a backup rod-and-reel rig to be attached -- and the reels continue to perform flawlessly.
Space-Age Ball Bearings
Our Platinum TwinDrag reels contain seven Class-5, ABEC, stainless-steel ball bearings, while our Boss TwinDrag reels have six Class-5, ABEC, stainless-steel ball bearings. Bearings are rated in classes, with Class 5 being the highest. Class-5 Series Satellite Bearings, for example, operate in orbiting satellites which are not subject to repair.
Bearings in our Platinum TwinDrag reels are positioned with five bearings in the spool and two bearings in the reel handle. Since the dual-drag design lessens side load, these bearings receive less side pressure, allowing them to run smoother and longer.
At Accurate, we follow inspection procedures which have been refined for nearly 50 years. Each TwinDrag reel undergoes the same rigorous inspection process, while our Statistical Process Control (SPC) procedures, along with our Zeiss Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), allow us to constantly monitor each production run.
Support and AccuCare
We pride ourselves on being a family-owned company which delivers excellent product support. On site, we have a team of highly qualified engineers who answer questions and provide service on your TwinDrag reels through our AccuCare program.
Factory-direct servicing also allows us to monitor our reels, gauge their performance and provide feedback for future designs.
