Families, fishermen and lovers of the outdoors turned out Sunday, August 19, for the annual Family Day in the Park at beautiful Waller Park in Santa Maria, CA. The 33rd annual event was a joint effort between Friends of Waller Park, the Santa Maria Valley YMCA, and Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary Club. A featured event was the "Huck Finn Fishin’ Derby," put on by the Santa Maria Valley Sportsmen's Association. Been There, Caught That was also proud to sponsor this event. The day also featured live bands, a watermelon-eating contest, children’s activities and games, a dog parade, food, prizes, arts and crafts.

Here's an Email we got from Greg Birkholz this morning. Everybody Jealous?

"I got an email Saturday night to fish on the Mary B with Charles Reed. I got to Monterey at 1am and was so happy to see that pretty blue "Mary B" parked right where he said she would be. We put the boat in at 4:30 and hooked many doubles and a triple and some singles. Charlie changed to treble hooks as opposed to the normal two pronged style hooks I always use and we didn't lose one fish. It is a pain to get them out though. We did have one short bite that grabbed a Rapala for a few seconds and didn't stick. Great humpback show and awesome getting to fish on Mary B again. We ended with 17 all nice grade fish. Charlie and Lou planned to spend the night and go back at it today. I got permission from my amazing wife and it was on. Fun trying to sleep in a little Mazda two nights in a row.
"Sloppy seas made a few guys turn around by 5am. We started right off with a triple, then a half hour later a 5-way hook up, we got 'em all. Now as the morning progressed we got triples and doubles about once an hour with a few singles in the mix. Conditions were such that we chose to end at 1pm with 15 fish. A nice treat came when the last fish was 40 + pounds. Thanks Charlie and Lou, Great fishing with you guys. Two day boat count: 32 fish." Thank you, Greg, for the report and photos!

Ed Dylina, one of our master anglers, remarks: "My first ever fish caught from my kayak, a 21-inch cabezon (Scorpaenichthys marmoratus). Gear used was as follows: 7'11" Okuma Guide Select 15-30 fishing rod paired with an Okuma Classic Pro xp fishing reel. The lures used were a 10 inch orange SeaSlug rigged with a red 6 oz jig head and a treble stinger, as well as a half ounce fluorescent yellow hair raiser jig used for a teaser 18 inches above the Slug. Rod/reel and tackle used were all purchased at Been There Caught That, my one-stop shop for all my fishing gear needs!"

Chris Pascua also fishes from his kayak. He says, "The head on this beast was like a bowling ball...A monster cabezon I caught this weekend kayak fishing!" Chris caught this monster with a Been There Caught That 10 inch pink SeaSlug.

Our Mermaid Belinda did not catch her lingcod (Oph liniodon elongatus) from a Kayak, but from a party boat out at La Purisima. Says Belinda, "He was 'hitchhiking' on one of the two fish I had on. Weighed 12.45 pounds." Congratulations, Belinda!

How to Use Your Smart Phone to Avoid Going Over any MPAs (Marine Protected Areas) by Accident

Go to http://dfg.ca.gov/m/MPA/Map, and you will find these directions: Enabling location services will identify your location in relationship to MPAs, but is not necessary to use this map.

For iPhone or iPad users, go to the main screen and open Settings → General → Location Services and turn it on. Then scroll to the Safari application (if available) and turn it on. If Safari is not listed, you do not need to do anything else.

For Android users, navigate to Menu → Settings → Enable Location and turn it on.

Notes Currently this map application works best in the iPhone, iPad or Android devices.

Touch panning and zooming are not available on many devices. After starting the map, click the gear icon then expand the settings panel. You can then enable pan buttons for the map.

Blackberry devices older than the Torch probably will not work at all. Newer devices may work to some extent.

A main focus of the event started by Friends of Waller Park — a nonprofit organization for the preservation and improvement of the park — is to show visitors the beauty of the open space at 3107 Orcutt Road. More than 6,000 people attended 2011's event, which included a Radford Kustoms Car Show for the first time. This year’s Family Day in the Park continued that tradition with the Car Show, with proceeds going to the YMCA. You can tell by the looks on the kids' faces in the photos that they had a great time!
